Point to Multipoint Networks
Point to Multipoint networks are generally wireless networks consisting of multiple access points. Typical applications include large hotel, motel, campground installations, even small cities. In the diagram, the blue lines represent backhaul connections to the main internet feed. These are accomplished using 802.11a connections with highly directional antennas. Since the two ends of the connection are fixed, the use of directional antennas can allow this link to extend over several miles (if clear line of sight is established).
At the end of the backhaul link a dual band radio is used to receive the backhaul connection to the internet and to distribute the signal locally to wireless laptops or client bridges or to other repeaters.
This is a simple and relatively inexpensive method of covering large areas with wireless service. The only real requirement is that you need to have AC power at the location of each of the distribution nodes
